The Steve Waugh Foundation exists to provide life-changing support for children and young adults living with Rare Diseases.
The Foundation is ‘somewhere to turn’ for families when hope seems lost. ‘Orphans of the health system,’ those living with Rare Diseases often are without diagnosis, without treatment and without reason to hope. We strive to change this.
We provide vital funding for Grants that go towards treatment, specialised equipment, and therapy. Through generous donations from our Patrons, Partners, Sponsors, Volunteers and Individual Donors we have been able to support hundreds of families who may have otherwise fallen through the cracks.
Our Major Fundraising event, The Captain’s Ride, is a gruelling 6-day bike ride that challenges riders both physically and mentally as we ride to put Rare Diseases on the map by raising awareness and much needed funding.

“The comradery definitely develops over the week. At the start of the week a lot of people don’t know each other, by the end of the week they become great mates. Day 5 - the shortest day of The Ride, a Boonah loop 75Km in and around Boonah with still plenty of hills and climbing to challenge weary legs and bodies. The Captain's Ride is about comradery and teamwork, we saw it in spades, needed now more than ever to get through the last 2 days.

The toughest and most dangerous day of The Ride. Threats all around- high fire danger warnings, extreme heat conditions, rugged terrain, and bush fires. The riders persevered pedalling 118KM and climbing 1501VM through eerie light and bush fire haze to make it to Boonah, Queensland.

Day 3 of The Captain's Ride - this highlight reel says it all. Longest day of The Ride, 175KM, 1358VM climbing, pushing through it, the Team got it done! Toowoomba to Warwick. Spurred on by all the amazing local schools, teachers & kids who came out to wave, high five & cheer our Riders on.

Day 2 of The Captain's Ride presented high winds making it all the more challenging. The Rider Team rode 100km and climbed 1184VM from Bunya Mountain to Toowoomba. Meanwhile on this day at Flemington, Vow And Declare is the first Australian-bred winner of the Melbourne Cup since Shocking in 2009.

Day 1 of The Captains Ride - they gathering on the start line a combination of nerves and excitement was felt by everyone. Day Six of The Captain's Ride! The adventure comes to an end with a beautiful ride from Tarraleah to Hobart. There was pure elation as the Team rode the final leg with green lights all the way to the cheering crowd! It was an epic 801km journey and a truly life changing experience for all the riders and families the Foundation supports. Well done team!

Most of us never really get to know a kid with a rare disease, or a life-limiting condition. But we can acknowledge that they are here, and are important to us.
inspiring and, so very true! I fight everyday hoping for a cure - as a Mom I can take on anything...I just don't want my daughter to have to because of my genes!

Thank you for this simple video. I have chronic Shingles, Fibromyalgia, and have recently been diagnosed with Leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV), also known as hypersensitivity vasculitis and hypersensitivity angiitis. ~Maggie
Our ten year old son Lachie has a gene mutation STXBP1 - Global Delay, Uncontrolled Epilepsy, Cortical Vision Impairment, Chronic Lung Disease and a Gastrostomy for all feeding. He is a beautiful soul and he has taught us about what's really important in life - FAMILY. I would love people to take the time to understand all the special kids in our world - it would make such a difference. :)
